I have never really had tile removed before, but I have heard that it can be a horrifying mess. Is it really that dusty? How "dustless" is the Dust Commander® system?

If you speak to anyone who has had tile removed from their home or business, the general consensus is that the traditional method causes complete disaster and they wish they would have known about the Dust Commander® system sooner. Traditional methods of tile removal create unbelievable amounts of dust that permeate ALL areas of your home and, not to mention, your lungs as well. A typical 500 square foot area of ceramic tile will produce close to 300 pounds of dust! However, the Dust Commander® System provides the removal of flooring material without the apprehension of toxic, dangerous silica concrete dust invading every square inch of your living or work space by capturing it at the source. We accredit our system to being 99% cleaner than the traditional method of tile removal.

My flooring retailer told me I have nothing to worry about because their installers use plastic and tape to contain the mess and the dust. I understand this is usually how it is done but does it really work?

The use of plastic and tape may reduce the amount of dust in a very small, confined area such as a closet or bathroom. Nevertheless, we must warn you that when the plastic is taken down or even just slightly parted to walk from one room to the other, there is no way to avoid large amounts of dust flying off of the plastic and onto your walls, into your air vents, and all over your furniture, closets, window treatments, electronics, etc. The Dust Commander® System is hands down the best way to prevent dust movement because it captures the dust the very moment it is created. You can see how messy the traditional method of tile removal is by watching the video on the first page of our website, www.dustcommander.com.

The flooring retailer I just went to said they offer "free" tile removal if I buy from them and let them install it. Is this a good deal?

Ever heard of the saying, "If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."? Some flooring retailers have special agreements with their installer that they have to remove the tile for free in exchange for getting installations. Therefore, these installers are not motivated to make any attempt to control the dust since there is no money involved. Speed is their only concern since they will only get paid for the amount of flooring they put down, not take up. As you might suspect, these installers usually do not remove all of the thinset and may actually lay the new floor over varying heights of existing thinset. If your floor is installed in this manner, it not only looks terrible, but it does not last very long either. This all being said, the only time you want to hear the word "free" when it comes to your flooring experience is when you call Dust Commander® "Virtually Dust Free" tile removal.

I just purchased my home and when I take possession, I would like to put down new floors while the home is still empty. Do I need the Dust Commander® System tile removal service?

Absolutely! Whether the home is empty or occupied, the Dust Commander® System can prevent very expensive damage to your concrete and central air system. With traditional methods of tile removal, the old-fashioned tools can actually cause extreme concrete damage, as well as fill your air ducts, heating and cooling system components with large amounts of fine dust. By having your air ducts cleaned you will incur another cost that can range anywhere from $250 to $800! In addition, your walls, ceilings, cabinets, ceiling fans, and light fixtures will be covered with dust, which will require professional help or a large amount of your own time. As we all know, time is money. Professional cleaning is very expensive and this type of dust requires not only one cleaning, but multiple cleanings. The Dust Commander® System has been designed to preserve the integrity of your concrete, capture all the dust created during the tile and thinset removal process, and protect the investment you made in your new home.

This is such a unique service, who came up with the Dust Commander System and how?

Don Preston has been in the flooring business since 1994. In those two decades, he has consistently seen problems with the traditional tile removal process. The biggest problem is that too much dust and mess is left behind in customers’ homes. The dust sticks around for months after the removal and is unhealthy for those with asthma/allergies and children. An additional problem he has found, is flooring customers deciding to live with old, outdated tile because they don’t want to suffer through the months of mess left by the process. Another issue Don sees is flooring stores and installers avoiding tile removal jobs altogether because customers are always unprepared & unhappy with the volume of dust created in their homes.

Don has spent countless hours researching ways to make the tile removal process virtually dust free. He considered and tried several devices on the market, but all had the same issue – they continuously got clogged. Also, most of the devices required hands and knees operation which is physically strenuous to the technicians operating them. So he decided to build his own device that would solve all these problems!

In the past two years, Don has built and field-tested over fifty different designs, making slight changes and additions along the way. He now believes he has perfected his virtually dust free tile removal system and is proud to introduce, and offer you, DUST COMMANDER ®.

What are the other benefits of the Dust Commander System?

Aside from being 99% cleaner than the traditional method, Dust Commander is also much healthier because it prevents silica from getting into your lungs and the lungs of the workers.

It is two times faster than the traditional method… we can actually remove up to 600 sq. ft. of tile in a day. Sometimes even more depending on the thickness of the thinset.

The Dustless grinding preps the floor for installers by leaving it smoother and flatter than the traditional method would.

AND, believe it or not, on top of preventing stress, Dust Commander saves a lot of money as well. When using the traditional method people do not account for expenses such as cleaning, hotel rooms and time. Like they all say, time is money!!

Dust Commander does a wide variety of tile removal such as Ceramic, Porcelain, and Slate; we also remove Marble, Travertine, and Saltillo which are stone tiles as well as VCT (or Vinyl). Other than tile we can also take up solid wood and engineered wood which can often be a tough and time consuming job for those using the traditional method.
